How to Get Rid of Bad Breath

There are various causes of halitosis. In some cases, bad breath is an indication of a more serious medical conditions, but in many times, bad breath is caused by postnasal drip and lack of oral hygiene. If your bad breath is not caused by a medical condition, then performing a good oral hygiene practices might help you.

The most common source of bad breath is your mouth. There might be a high number of anaerobic bacteria breaking-down protein in your mouth thus producing the volatile sulfur compounds. These compounds have an unpleasant odor and they’re the source of halitosis.

Now, this bacteria is actually not the “bad guys” in the usual sense of the word. They help us in the digestion process. Only when they’re present in a high number, they cause bad breath. Postnasal drip and food debris getting stuck in your tounge or in various sites of your teeth and gums can “invite” this kind of condition.

One way to get rid of this type of bad breath is by performing good oral hygiene practices. Brushing your teeth thoroughly and regularly might help you eliminate this bad breath by eliminating food debris that are stucked in various sites of your teeth and gums. Flossing on a daily basis is also important since it can eliminate food debris that can’t be reached by your toothbrush.

But if your bad breath is an indication of a more serious disease such as gum disease, you may want to seek a professional help from a dentist. A dentist is the first place to go, since most bad breath causes are in the mouth. If it happens that the source of your bad breath is not in your mouth, your dentist will probably recommend you to other specialists.
