It seems to me that there are at least two popular terms for bad breath in the medical field, namely “oral malodor” and “halitosis.” The latter come from the Latin halitus, which means breath, and the Greek suffix osis, which means condition.

Even though Dr. Louis Touyz in his article, “Oral Malodor–A Scientific Perspective”, said halitosis refers to bad breath that resulted from certain causes, namely the systemic metabolic conditions, I don’t think this has become a convention in the medical field. I saw that some experts such as M. Rosenberg use halitosis as a generic descriptor for bad breath.

If you’re only a bad breath sufferer and not a medical practitioner, I don’t think this “accuracy of naming using scientific jargons” is important for you. After all, medical practitioners will usually use layman’s terms when they communicate with you.

However, if you’re looking for terms that you can use in the search engines to find general information about bad breath, then besides the previously mentioned terms, you can also use the keywords “breath odor” and “foul breath.” Search also for similar generic terms in your dictionary. Be cautious though with the internet, because it’s full of crap. Make sure that you only read credible information, since it’s about your health.
